Wind River Mountains near Dubois, Wyomimg

The Wind River Mountains spill from the northwest down into the desert landscape of southwestern Wyoming. These are mountains of heroic proportions and even now they remain remarkably remote, roadless, and distant.

You can take many short drives into the mountains or explore them on foot on one of many short or long day hikes.  Or Carolyn will be glad to arrange for horseback rides in the area.  The nearby Badlands and the Absaroka Range to the north feature great hikes and drives as well.

With four wilderness areas and three national forests within 30 miles of Dubois, there is plenty to see and do.  Hiking, photography, and rock collecting in the summer and cross-country skiing and snowmobiling in the winter are just the beginning of your Wind River adventure!

If you are lucky enough to be in the mountains, you are lucky enough!

"Awesome place, fabulous people, terrific accommodations - can't wait to go back" - Washington, D.C.

The Badlands stretch for miles down the Wind River Valley east of Dubois.  Their variegated colors entice you to photograph each new vista as it unfolds in front of you.

In Dubois, you'll find the National Big Horn Sheep Interpretive Center with information on big horn sheep, especially the herd on Whiskey Mountain (which you can see from the window of your room).  The timber industry goes back to the early 1900's when hardy Scandinavian tie-hacks worked long hours hewing ties for the railroad.  Memorabilia from this era is preserved at the Wind River Historical Center which also features a diorama and history of the pre-historic Sheep Eater Indians.
